Muchas gracias is one of the many phrases in Spanish for “thank you very much”.

With Thanksgiving only a few days away, I’d like to teach you some Spanish Thanksgiving words and phrases to express gratitude. 

Being grateful is something I’ve been working on during the last couple of years. Even though we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in Argentina, I think it’s extremely important to be grateful every day.

Yes, in fact, let me teach you three formulas to be grateful in Spanish.

  1. Doy gracias por + cosa o acción que se agradece
  2. Agradezco + cosa o acción que se agradece
  3. Estoy agradecida/o por + cosa o acción que se agradece

Doy gracias por

Dar las gracias por algo is to “give thanks” for something. See an example:

  • Doy gracias por la familia que me ha tocado y por los amigos que me dio la vida. A mis padres, por educarme y criarme con amor. A mis hermanas, por ser como son. A mis cuñados, por quererme como a una hermana. A mi pareja, por su amor incondicional. A mis primos, por alegrarme la infancia. A mis amigos, por bancarme en las buenas y las malas.

Agradezco

Agradecer is the verb for “to say thanks” in Spanish. See an example:

  • Agradezco tener buena salud, ser libre, vivir en democracia, poder dormir en una cama calentita, tener pan en la mesa, tener educación y poder disfrutar de la playa y otros placeres.

Estoy agradecida/o

Estar agradecido or agradecida is how we say we are grateful in Spanish. See an example:

  • Estoy extremadamente agradecida por todo lo que gané con mi trabajo: experiencia, confianza en mí misma, crecimiento, aprecio, reconocimiento, colegas y amigos nuevos.

Take these five phrases as a model. I wrote the optional, changeable parts of the phrases in between brackets. 

  • Muchas gracias (por todo). 
  • Muchísimas gracias, (de todo corazón).
  • Doy las gracias por (todo lo que esta vida me dio).
  • Agradezco muchísimo (todo lo que usted ha hecho por mí).
  • Estoy muy agradecida por (su amabilidad conmigo).
