The Spanish language is a beautiful and expressive form of communication spoken by millions of people worldwide. While many may know that the Spanish alphabet consists of 27 letters, some may not be aware of the intriguing addition of extra letters. In this blog post, we will explore what are the extra letters in the Spanish alphabet and delve into the reasons why they matter.
The Spanish Alphabet and Its Extra Letters
Compared to the English alphabet, the standard Spanish alphabet also contains 27 letters. However, the Spanish alphabet includes five extra letters that set it apart. These additional characters are “ch,” “ll,” “rr,” “ñ,” and “gu.” These extra letters represent unique sounds that are distinct to the Spanish language, and their inclusion plays a crucial role in preserving the language’s phonetic richness.

1. “Ch” and “Ll”: The Unique Digraphs
The digraphs “ch” and “ll” were traditionally considered as separate letters in the Spanish alphabet. Nevertheless, in recent years, they have been officially removed, but their distinctive sounds continue to be an integral part of the language. For instance, “ch” produces a sound similar to the English “ch” in “cheese,” while “ll” has a sound reminiscent of the “y” in “yellow.”
Some words with “ch” are: cucaracha, noche, chinela, carancho, churro.
Some words with “ll” are: llamada, lleno, pollito, gallo, lluvia.
In Argentina the letters ‘ll’ and ‘y’ are pronounced like the ‘sh’ in “shake”. Want to challenge your inner Argentine accent? See these videos in my YouTube channel to hear the Argentine pronunciation and try to mimic it.
2. “Rr”: The Rolled “R”
Additionally, the famous rolled “r” is another extraordinary feature of the Spanish language. Represented by “rr,” this double “r” is pronounced by rapidly rolling the tongue, creating a distinct and vibrant sound. Mastering this unique letter is essential for anyone looking to speak Spanish fluently and accurately.
Some words with “rr” are: parra, terreno, carril, perro, corrupción.
3. “Ñ”: The Enye
“Ñ” (pronounced enye) is one of the most recognizable extra letters in Spanish. Most important, it is a letter with its own unique sound, similar to the “ny” sound in “canyon” but with a distinctive Spanish flair. As can be seen below, “Ñ” is used in many common words, and its absence can lead to confusion or misinterpretation.
Some words with “ñ” are: apañar, cañería, año, baño.
4. “Gu”: The Uncommon Addition
Although “gu” is not traditionally regarded as an individual letter, its status as a special digraph is noteworthy. As a result of the combination of “g” and “u” a unique sound in Spanish is produced, especially when followed by the vowels ‘e’ and ‘i’, as in the word “guerra” (war) or “guiso” (stew). Therefore, understanding this digraph is crucial for correct pronunciation.
Some words with “gu” are: amague, apague, pegue, delegue, guitarra, guita, guinda.
